TOPIC: Soft Skills Essentials:  Morning Startup Routine

By: Kirby Lee, PE, CEM, GBE, LEED AP BD+C

Presentation Abstract:

Everyone wants to have a successful day when they wake up and the morning is a critical time when the day can be won or lost by the decisions a person makes.   This soft skills presentation dives into all the components of a morning routine focused on strengthening a person’s self-development skills and mental game.  If you want to have a successful day, you need to model yourself after what successful people do in the morning.  With a strong morning routine, you can have an amazing day focused on taking yourself to a higher level and achieving your goals.

Speaker Bio:

Kirby has been through a unique path with experience working in HVAC since he was 13 years old for his father. He has a experienced background in the HVAC industry as contractor/engineer/owner’s rep which allows him to look at problems from a multifaceted approach to help other solve problems. His current role is for Johnson Controls as the Commercial Systems Specialist for the Carolinas. Kirby’s engineering specialty focuses around Energy Modeling / Audit but a transformative moment in 2019 changed his life trajectory born from a speech called the Lion Attitude. Kirby’s career path through the HVAC world took a non-traditional path and soft skills were something that he didn’t learn until later in life through his own development journey. After this reinvention process, it was clear his mission was to help teach people soft skills to help improve their lives in service to other people. Kirby also enjoys acting as a consultant coach to help professionals achieve their goals using the approach of a self-created system named after the Lion Attitude. He coaching style is based on his core values of Courage, Strength, Bravery, Leadership, & Heart.

He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of NC, holds credentials as a Certified Energy Manager, Green Building Engineer, and LEED AP Building Design + Construction. He received his BSME at NC State University and AS Engineering at Lenoir Community College. He has been married to his wife Tara for 16 years and has a daughter Madelyn that is 5 years old that brings him lots of joy.

Kirby is a former 2-term Triangle ASHRAE Chapter past president, winner of the prestigious Region IV Rudy Ferguson Memorial Award, and led the Triangle Chapter team to a #1 ranking in the US (#2 in the world) in the SY20 year for chapter performance metrics. His current ASHRAE role is serving as the Triangle Chapter 2023 Chapter Regional Conference General Chair in planning stages for August 2023.
