JANUARY HISTORY NEWSLETTER ARTICLE
Report from ASHRAE Winter Conference
Greetings from sunny (sometimes) Chicago! I am writing this article from my hotel room – just a few, but very chilly, steps from the McCormick Place convention center where tomorrow the AHR Expo swings into full gear with the largest HVAC marketplace event on the planet! With more than 1600 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees, it is the MackDaddy! For those of you who are new to ASHRAE, there are two society meetings held each year – one in the winter (typically held at the end of January/first of February) and the other in the summer (typically held at the end of June, and for some reason called the “annual” conference). The winter meeting convenes in one of five cities that have convention centers large enough to host the AHR show and for as long as anyone can remember, every third year the winter meeting is held in Chicago. With the high temperature today of 20°F (the high yesterday was 12°F) it is a great time to stay inside and look at the latest and greatest in HVAC technology. Starting a few days before the AHR Expo and running concurrently, the ASHRAE winter meeting is where 3000 ASHRAE members from around the world converge to further the business of ASHRAE. Here you will find members working to write standards, update handbooks, provide continuing education and certifications, and tackle the issues of the day as they relate to HVAC&R. On Thursday, the winter meeting and the 2024 AHR show will be history. Make plans now to join us at the next annual meeting in Indianapolis June 22-26, and at the next winter meeting and AHR Expo to be held in Orlando, FL, February 10-12, 2025. See you there!

Government Advocacy - Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The United States achieved a 1.9% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023, capping a 17.2% reduction since 2005, marking the lowest level of GHG emissions in 50 years. This has largely been achieved through the phaseout of coal burning power plants, however natural gas burning power plants have gained a much larger market share in turn, outpacing renewables. Additionally, much greater emission mitigation is required for the U.S. to meet its 2030 and 2050 climate goals. The building, transportation, and industry sectors have maintained level carbon emissions since 2005, while the electricity generation sector has seen a sizable decline in emissions. Considering that the vast majority of U.S. electricity end use is in buildings, further adoption of energy efficiency standards will help continue the trend of lower carbon emissions from the only sector seemingly able to lower its greenhouse gas emissions.
